A Sermon Series on Simplifying Your Life
Starting June 17/18
One of the unfulfilled goals of my life in the past five years has been to clean out our garage. What a dump! But this summer, I'm going to clean it, by cracky! Enough with unwanted stuff I keep piling up! Enough with the junk that I keep stumbling over! Enough with the important things being blocked in the corner by unimportant things! It's time for a change! It's time for a good, old-fashioned garage cleaning!
Come to think of it, I could easily be talking about my life here and not my garage, couldn't I?
Please join Pastor Maria and me for a six-week preaching series beginning Father's Day, June 17 (and repeated Monday night, June 18), that explores how God's values in the scripture can help us slow down, organize, and prioritize. Here's just a hint of what to expect:
| June 17-18 | "Clean My Garage? When?!" Why we go too fast, and ways to slow down. |
| June 24-25 | "What's Behind the Boxes?" What we miss out on when we go too fast. |
| July 1-2 | "Marinate in the Mess" Balancing rest and work. |
| July 8-9 | "Stop the Madness" Learning how to say "No." |
| July 15-16 | "Leave Some Room" Ways to preserve peace and quiet. |
| July 22-23 | "Clean It Out!" Recognizing when enough is enough. |
Summer worship at Our Saviour's happens on Sunday mornings at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. at the Jackson Street church and Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at the Our Saviour's Chapel on Swedish Drive.
Get out the giant dustpan and get ready for that much-needed cleaning!
Pastor Brian

Fellowship
Jesus and Java Summer Schedule
This evening book group will meet Tues., June 12, at 7:00 p.m. to discuss Digging to America by Anne Tyler. Two families arrive at the Baltimore International Airport in August 1997 to claim the Korean infants they have adopted. Strangers until that evening, they are destined to begin a friendship that will span their adoptive daughters' childhoods. The Donaldsons are a middle-class white American couple while the Yazdans are Iranian-Americans. Cultural differences are brought to a head when a widowed grandfather begins to show romantic interest in the Iranian grandmother. The author is able to depict seemingly quiet and unremarkable lives with sympathy and humor. The book for Tues., July 10 at 7:00 p.m. is The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio by Terry Ryan.
On Tues., Aug. 14 the group will be meeting to select books for the next 11 months. If you love books or think you should read more and would like to join a group of women of all ages from various backgrounds, this group is for you. All participants should come prepared to recommend 1-3 books you have read. The selections can be fiction or nonfiction on any topic. The books should be available from the public library and preferably in paperback. New members are invited. Please come and check it out. Questions? Give Jo Rohady a call at 763-434-3203.
Faith and Fiction Summer Schedule
Faith and Fiction, an afternoon book group, meets the second Tuesday of every month. The book for Tues., June 12, at 1:30 p.m. is Old School by Tobias Wolff. This is a novel about a young man determined to fit in at his New England prep school. The book for Tues., July 10, is Leap of Faith: Memoirs of an Unexpected Life by Queen Noor. This is her personal story of being a young American woman who became the wife of King Hussein, Arab monarch of Jordan.
The book for Tues., August 14, is The Scent of God by Beryl Singleton Bissell. In this powerful memoir she tells of her 10 years in a cloistered convent and her struggles with human desires.

BeFriender's Corner
Isn't spring a luscious beautiful time of the year as the trees, grass, and flowers are bringing forth new life for us to enjoy? We all need to take time to refresh ourselves, too, and think about how we might better serve our church and fill the commission of Jesus to serve in His name. Maybe we need to take a walk through the woods so we may experience the stillness, silence, and peaceful beauty that
God promises us in the twenty third Psalm. It's very refreshing and rewarding to spend time alone with God. As we go about our busy summer schedules, let's remember to take time to visit those who cannot get out to enjoy the great outdoors. We can be their connection to the peace and love that God offers to each one of us. Just a visit or phone call can bring a refreshing feeling to a shut-in. As BeFrienders we try to share the new refreshing life that is ours through the love of Christ. If you would like to become a part of the BeFriender Ministry, contact Con Matros. New members are always welcome as WE GO IN PEACE AND SERVE THE LORD.
The Word of God Being Planted in Bosnia
Excerpts from A Letter from Bosnia
From Michael Waskosky, Sarajevo, BiH, April 2007
Chao or if you prefer Hello,
Wow, you would not believe what great weather we are having here in Sarajevo. It has been around 70 degrees, which has been very nice. I have been wearing shorts for the past few days!
Last Monday, we met for the first time at the Germans' house with Vinko, his wife Alma, and his daughter Sarah. We had a celebration for Vinko and his family because they bought their first car, and also Alma was hired for a new job! Many of you may not be aware of how hard it is to get a job here in Bosnia, but it is very difficult. Once one has a job, he or she works very hard to keep that job. Thursday, April 12 was Vinko's birthday, so I made sure to send him a birthday wish. It is very important to Bosnian people that their friends send them birthday wishes.
I will be leaving Bosnia on April 27. I leave Sarajevo at 7:50 a.m. on an Austrian airline. I will make my first stop in Vienna. From Vienna I will fly to Washington. From Washington, I will finally fly to Minneapolis. I will arrive in Minneapolis around 6:56 p.m. After a very long day of travel, I will be able to see Lindy for the first time in eight months! It will be great.
I have been doing well here in Sarajevo, and I have enjoyed getting to know Bosnians. I have worked hard, but wish I could communicate even more effectively in Bosnian. I also wish I could have made more Bosnian friends. However, it has been quite an experience over here. I didn't imagine that I would learn as much as I have. God has taught me to rely on Him, which is one of the best lessons I can learn. Although it has been very hard along the way, it has be a wonderful time, which I would not exchange for anything.
Oh, and one more thing, I am an uncle again. Her name is Allison Marie born April 10, 2007, at 2:50 a.m. in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. Four weeks early, she weighed 6 lbs. 5 oz. and she was 19 inches long.
Praises:
Please pray that:
Thank you for keeping Cory and me in your prayers.

The Resource Center (library) challenges each school-age child to read *eight or more books from the church library (or any Christian-based book) that is at or above his/her reading level.
*Why eight books?
Allington and McGill-Franzen (A & M) say that when a child reads as few as six books during the summer, he or she is likely to fend off summer reading loss and maintain the reading gains made during the previous school year. When a child reads even more (8-20 books) s/he may gain ground. According to A & M, the schools need to put at least 10-20 self selected books into children's hands the last day of school.

What are you going to do over the summer? Are you afraid you're going to be bored? What if you just want to sit outside and enjoy a beautiful Minnesota day? I have ONE answer for all three of these questions. How about checking out a book or two or three from the Tree of Life Resource Center library) at Our Saviour's? What a great idea! We have been so blessed here at Our Saviour's to have a really good library with a really great selection of books thanks to a lot of hard work from the Tree of Life Resource Center Team and thanks to the very generous people of Our Saviour's who have supported us through contributions and book sales and from past smoothie sales, etc. Please, come visit us or like I like to say, come CHECK US OUT. (What a shameless pun!!!) The Tree of Life Library is open whenever the church is open. We also keep a bookcart stocked full of books in the Rotunda. No matter what your age or interest, I'm sure you will find many books to enjoy this summer borrowed from the Tree of Life. So, until fall, happy reading!

Devoted Friends and Members of Our Saviour's,
The Ajax family thank one and all for your sincere love and compassion during our time of sorrow. We wish all to know that, while Bonnie was given weeks to live after surgery, she was with us for months. During this get ready time to go home, she was blessed with no pain. It was 60 years of a wonderful, loving marriage.

CAMP SHAMINEAU NEEDS YOU:
Camp Shamineau relies on help from volunteers to work (for just one week) alongside the summer staff nurses to help care for children, teens, and young adults. Your responsibilities would include: distributing medication, providing first aid treatment, managing chronic and acute illnesses, and promoting the health and safety of campers and staff. You and your family can enjoy the week at camp, while being in the center of God's ministry! Volunteers receive a coupon for a $160.00 credit toward Shamineau events - and a terrific experience! For more info, contact Beth at Camp Shamineau, 1-800-305-8118.
Making a Difference in the World
On Sun, Nov. 11, 2007, in the Gathering Space, Our Saviour's will be providing a Mission Fair! This will be an opportunity for OSLC small groups that are involved in mission to present to the congregation what they are doing. A mission group is defined as one which reaches out, in some way, beyond the walls of Our Saviour's; to the community, the nation, and/or the world. This will also be an opportunity for members to sign up for missions that they feel passionate about. Please mark the date on your calendar and watch for more information about how to make a difference in our world.
Notes from the Parish Nurse
Hi, my name is Norma Munson and I was commissioned in May as the Parish Nurse for Our Saviour's. My husband, Denny, and I have been members of this church for over 30 years, so many of you know both of us. I'm sure you are all wondering what a parish nurse will be doing for our congregation, so I will try to give you some idea. A parish nurse holds the spiritual dimension to be central to this nursing practice. It also encompasses the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of nursing practice. As the parish nurse I will work in collaboration with the pastoral staff and congre-gational members to build on and strengthen capacities of individuals, families, and the congregation to understand and care for one another as part of their relationship with God. I believe that spiritual health is central to well being and influences a person's ENTIRE being. Healing may exist even in the absence of cure. As a parish nurse I believe that all persons are sacred and must be treated with respect and dignity. I ask for congregational support and guidance from the Holy Spirit as I begin this very special and important ministry.
An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Carrots
Taken from: Wheat Ridge Ministries Vol. 10, no. 5,May 2007
Gardening is a great way to get some exercise and can result in bunches of beautiful blooms or a flavorful feast of fresh veggies. Unfortunately, thousands of people wind up in the ER each year from gardening mishaps. Before you reach for your spade and watering can, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have garnered the following tips for safety while gardening.
Physical activities like gardening can prevent obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, stroke, depression, colon cancer, and premature death. So enjoy the fresh air and throw some variety in your exercise regimen with gardening!
Spending Time in the "Spiritual Garden"
Plant three rows of squash
Plant seven rows of peas
Plant seven heads of lettuce
No garden is complete without turnips
After planting, may you "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3:18) - and may you reap rich results!

Experience the "Helper's High" - Volunteer
By Hap LaCrone (taken from the StarTribune)
The rewards of volunteerism are numerous. Here are a few of these blessings:
Many people experience the "attitude of gratitude" and begin to recognize their own blessings when they help others who are far less fortunate and in need.
Helping others can be of great assistance in deflating negative self-centeredness and self -absorption. Focusing on the needs of others rather than on one's own perceived problems is one of the greatest elixirs for enhancing a person's mental health It is said that when we care for others, we care for ourselves.
Volunteering provides the chance for people to try something new and challenges them to work outside their comfort zone. Many volunteers find a new talent when they begin helping others and continue to fine-tune already exiting talents.
Volunteering can allow individuals to fulfill lifelong dreams and ambitions. Many volunteers choose to serve in an area that fulfills their innermost desires, which too often have taken a backseat to school, career and family.
Volunteering opens doors to new communities, friends and professional contacts. You can develop or share networking skills, improve organizational or management expertise and increase interpersonal proficiency.
Many volunteers find their service builds self-confidence, self-esteem and healthy attitudes as they help others. Finding new skills and talents, meeting new people and serving others can truly help you feel good about yourself.
Volunteering is a great way to explore possible career options, and it allows you to discover whether you like certain kinds of work without making drastic career changes.
It can be a life-changing experience for everyone involved. Remember many who start volunteering become "hooked" for life.
The Bibles in the pews were donated by members in the congregation.
