Message from Pastor Brian

"Make Way for '40 Days'!" by Pastor Brian

When Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of East Bethel launches its "40 Days of Purpose" campaign on Saturday, September 25, 2004, it will join a worldwide network of thousands of churches. Inspired by remarkable stores of spiritual renewal and growth, an estimated 10,000 churches from the 60 denominations (including many Lutherans!) have experienced the purpose-driven phenomena inspired by a California pastor's best-selling book, The Purpose Driven Life.

During the 40 Days of Purpose campaign at Our Saviour's, the truths about God's five purposes for people-worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism-will be communicated repeatedly in six ways:

Never in my life have I been more excited about an event! Lately, I've been meeting with several Lutheran pastors in the Metro area whose congregations they serve have experienced the "40 Days" campaign. One common thread amongst them all is their observation of people beginning to live lives of purpose and direction, people whose lives are permanently changed for the good. One pastor spoke of a man who said, "My life had become drudgery. After experiencing the 40 Days, every day has become a gift for me! There's no such thing as 'drudgery' anymore!"

For months, a planning team, led by our Faith Formation Coordinator, Con Matros has been doing intensive planning for this life-changing event, making way for YOU to be a part. Please see Con's message in this publication for more information. Set aside Saturday, September 25, the day the new chapter of your life begins! Make way for '40 Days'!

40 Days of Purpose

What is it? It is a 40-day Bible Study focused on providing insight for those who seek to answer the question, "What on Earth am I here for?"

Who's doing it? Thousands of churches worldwide will participate together in a study based on the best-selling book, "The Purpose Driven Life". Rick Warren, founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California is the author of this interdenominational book. The book is a devotional with 40 days of individual meditations to help each participant develop a personal devotional life.

How does it all work? While each of us searches for the unique answer as to why God created us, we will learn that there are five major purposes for our existence according to the Word of God. The 40-day journey includes three opportunities to participate. These opportunities are:

  1. Weekend Services - the Pastors and Sunday School will introduce a new topic each Sunday. The Confirmation/Youth will introduce the same topic each Wednesday throughout the campaign.
  2. Individually - each participant will read a personal devotion from "The Purpose Driven Life" daily for the 40 Days
  3. Groups - all adults will meet in small groups at host homes once a week for each of the six weeks. These groups will watch a 40 Days of Purpose video and share in a discussion centered around the video, devotional reading and weekend services.

All ages in our church will be learning the same information and will have the opportunity to memorize a weekly Bible verse.

When do I get the book? The campaign begins at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church at 19001 Jackson St. NW in East Bethel on Saturday, September 25 at 4 p.m. Rick Warren will share a message via a simulcast event. The Purpose Driven Life book will be handed out at this time. The books will be available to you at a cost of $10 each. If you cannot afford a book, one will be gifted to you!

What else should I know? A Ministry Fair on October 24 and a Mission Fair on October 31 will give people the opportunity to get involved in a ministry and a mission. The whole idea is to get people to look at their own lives and then what they can do in God's kingdom.

What are the Five Purposes? The five purposes of a purpose driven life are:

Please consider joining a small group and discover God's plans for you.

National Simulcast Event - Saturday, September 25 beginning at 4:00 p.m.

Simulcast: Attend the National Simulcast Event at Our Saviour's in the Worship Center for an inspirational message from Rick Warren, author of "The Purpose Driven Life". You'll hear about the 40 Days of Purpose and the 5 Life Purposes that our church family and surrounding community will be studying beginning September 25. Invite your neighbors and friends to come to this event. Childcare will be provided.

Worship: After the Simulcast, please join Lori Krause and the Pastors as we celebrate and worship God with the 5:25 p.m. Spirit of Praise Worship.

Tailgate Party: Following worship, join with all of your friends - both old and new - for a Tailgate Party in the parking lot. Bring a picnic for you and your family and friends, lawn chairs, blankets, grills, thermoses of coffee or hot chocolate - whatever you want! Just enjoy the time together.

Comments from Simulcast participants, October 12, 2002:
"This Simulcast has generated so much excitement and energy!"
"In 41 years I have never been so moved by a teaching as I was today."
"We will never be the same!"

40 Days of Purpose Prayer Focus

Host Homes and Facilitators of Groups
"Pray that the Master's Word will simply take off and race through the country to a groundswell of response, just as it did among you."
2 Thessalonians 3:1 (MSG)

Pray that God will graciously bless our Host Homes by bringing people together to launch new groups. Ask that God will create a bond of friendship in these groups during and beyond the 40 Days of Purpose Campaign, as our members develop lasting relationships to His glory and honor.

40 Days of Purpose - Sign up to participate in Small Groups at Host Homes on: September 11 & 12, 18 & 19, 25 & 26 in the Gathering Space at the 40 Days Table.

40 Days of Purpose Facilitator Training - plan to attend one of the following:
Tuesday, September 7, 10-11:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 8, 7- 8:30 p.m. or Thursday, September 9, 7- 8:30 p.m. You will receive your discussion questions and training at that time. Please plan to attend one of these training events. Call Con for questions.

Memory Verse - Week 1 - What on Earth Am I Here For?

Ephesians 2:10 (NRSV)
"For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life."

24 Hour Prayer Event - Friday, September 10, 5:25 p.m. through Saturday, September 11, 5:25 p.m.

Prayer Labyrinth
Join us for worship following your prayer journey.

A Prayer Labyrinth will be set up in the Gathering Space. The intention of the labyrinth is to give you space and time for spiritual and personal reflection in a world that crowds it out.

You will bring a Discman with headphones (or one will be provided to you). You'll be given a CD and each track on the CD will relate to one of 11 stations of the labyrinth. You will listen to the lyrics and the instructions on the CD and you follow the labyrinth's path. You may take as much time as you want during the labyrinth - we suggest setting aside at least an hour.

Walking a Prayer Labyrinth can be a very moving spiritual experience. You may want to spend time in the Sanctuary afterwards. People will be available for you if you would like assistance. Walking a Prayer Labyrinth is a very personal experience. You will be walking in silence - paying no attention to those who are walking the Prayer Labyrinth at the same time. You can walk at your own pace and stay at each station as long as you desire.

We hope you will come to experience the Prayer Labyrinth.

Prayer Fasting
Fasting is a spiritual discipline that is taught in the Bible. Fasting, according to the Bible, means to voluntarily reduce or eliminate something from your life for a specific time and purpose.

The United Day of Fasting for the 40 Days of Purpose campaign is done for three primary reasons:

  1. Fasting gives you more time for prayer.
  2. Fasting demonstrates the depth of your desire when praying for something.
  3. Fasting releases God's supernatural power to do his will.

Two Cautions:

  1. Fasting is not "earning" an answer to prayer. God wants to answer our prayers and he answers out of grace. Fasting simply prepares us for God's answer.
  2. Fast only if your health allows it at this time. If you are able only to do a partial fast - do it in faith and God will honor your intentions.

If you are interested, stop by Con's office for information on how to fast in a healthy way.

Prayer Walking
Come to the church to walk around the campus and throughout the church building while praying scripture and prayers. The church will be open 24 hours beginning Friday at 5:25 p.m

It is important to remember that God's power is unleashed through the activity of our prayers. Although Campaign plans are necessary, it is prayer that ultimately brings the power of God into this process. He transforms lives and brings lasting change to our church and community. When prayer touches the fuse of God's power, amazing things can happen!

Prayer is the simplest form of communication that we have with God. It is during times of reflection and quiet that we hear God speaking to our hearts, renewing us in His presence. Prayer is a special time of praising Him, confessing our sins, and expressing our own needs to God. It is also a time to ask Him to be working in the world around us. We are praying that God will send a wave of spiritual growth across America and the world. More than 1,500 churches are participating, representing all 50 states, as well as 9 foreign countries. Your prayers matter during this incredible time.

Prayer walking can be defined as "praying on-site with insight." On-site praying is simply praying in the very places where you expect your prayers to be answered. It is a deliberate and planned time of focused prayer. Be prepared to join God in the phenomenal way He is working around you before, during, and after the 40 Days of Purpose Campaign! Ask God to "open your eyes spiritually". To let you see His plans through His eyes. Through God's inspiration, you will discern certain areas that need your concentrated prayer. You will see new potential in your friends, family members, neighbors, fellow church members, and co-workers. Your on-site prayers will prepare resistant hearts to be open to spiritual growth and participation in the 40 Days of Purpose Campaign.

Prayer in the Sanctuary
The Sanctuary will be open all 24 hours for you to come in, write down your prayer requests. Bring your prayers before God during this time. If you desire others to pray with you, someone will be available for you. If you wish to write down your prayers, others will pray those prayers for you when you leave. Or, you can come in to pray for those who have left their prayer concerns.

Music will be playing quietly in the background and the candles will be lit. The Baptismal Font will be filled with water to remind us of our Baptism. The Communion will be present on the Altar to remind us of Jesus' gift to us.

If you have any questions about any of these methods of prayer, please contact Con Matros in the church office. If you can help by being one of the host's during part of these 24 hours, please contact her.

Patriot Day - a Day of Remembrance

On December 18, 2001, congress approved a joint resolution designating September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day". It's a day to remember the more than 3,000 innocent lives lost on that September morning in 2001.

The resolution requests that each year the President issue a proclamation calling on the American people and state and local governments to observe the day with appropriate programs and activities. Those activities include remembrance services, candlelight vigils, moments of silence, and flying the American flag at half-staff.

In his 2003 proclamation President Bush said, "on that day, and in its aftermath, we saw the greatness of America in the bravery of victims; in the heroism of first responders who laid down their lives to save others; in the compassion of people who stepped forward to help those they had never met; and in the generosity of millions of Americans who enriched our country with acts of service and kindness."

Keep them all in your prayers this Patriot Day.

Greater Outreach

Lutheran World Relief Accepts $500,000 Award from the Pierre and Pamela Omidyar Fund: Money to Aid Darfur, Sudan.

The Omidyars, founders of eBay stated that the grant is for people "in greatest danger" in what is judged to be the world's worst current humanitarian crisis. In providing this much-needed funding for the Western Sudan/Chad Darfur crisis, the foundation cited LWR for its work.

LWR is putting the grant funds to use to protect people forced from their homes by raiding militia in the past year. These people, who live under harsh conditions, now, are facing disease and malnutrition. LWR and its partners have long experience working in Sudan; they now are gearing up to assist people living in camps and burned-out villages by:

Thank You

Dear Friends in Christ,

Let me tell you something amazing. There is one little congregation in Honolulu, Hawaii that may have more former atheists among its members than any congre-gation in the entire ELCA. What God is doing among them is amazing, and you have helped it happen! Your recent mission support offering of $1773 will serve to streng-then and empower this and hundreds of other missions. On behalf of those who are about to hear the story of Jesus be-cause of you, thank you.

Pastor Heather E Hammond, Bishop's Associate
